Honorable Mention
Reconciliation Concealed
Carin

Inside me, the passion,
the spirit of a warrior
juxtaposed with the heart
of a peacemaker.

How can I serve?

I can make the past speak -
the men who stood where you stand,
the ones who knew
what you know now;
they whisper across the nascent
hours of the nation;
it's bloody, noisy,
breached removal from Mother.

Is this how I become worthy?
Can I give back
by giving your ancient brethren a voice?

You speak of bloody footprints
from snowy Valley Forge
to sandy Pearl Harbor,
the honorable, noble nameless.

I know them well. They sing
of their foundations back home,
strong through the earthquakes of war;
they write letters with wounded hands,
not to their wives or sweethearts.

They write them to me.

In every object I hold-
as the first to touch the bayonet
in three centuries,
or for each muster list newly discovered
in the bowels of an old town library,
I can resuscitate a casualty.

My commission of duty -
to ensure that those who were willing
to make the ultimate sacrifice
are never sacrificed
on the altars of disrespect,
historical neglect.

My strength is not for me;
my body will not fight your fight,
but my resolve is muscled.
I serve you who serve 'we' -
come smell the newly aerated earth,
walk the field of footprints;
I can uncover them for you!
If you cannot hear it,
I will recount your geneology;
If you cannot feel it, I will
reach out the hand of the Revolutionary
and entrust it to your grasp.
